ST. THOMAS, USVI — All glass bottle drop-offs have been postponed for the remainder of April and May. The drop-offs have been cancelled because bottles were left near the West Bay Supermarket over the past weekend, as reported by the St. Thomas Source.

Howard Forbes Jr. runs the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Thomas and oversees the USVI Glass Recovery Project. He issued a plea via their website, "We kindly ask the public to please not leave any glass bottles at West Bay if no one from the team is outside the building with tents set up."

The Glass Recovery Project has accepted more than 2,000 bottles since January. Bottles come from beach clean-ups, restaurants and drop-off events that are open to the public. The bottles are crushed and turned into sand , which is subsequently used to create sandbags. According to the St. Thomas Source, sandbags created by the project will be distributed to residents for free.

Check out the VIMAS website for more information on when the program will resume accepting bottles.
