📰 News we're reading

1. Ice melt on sidewalks can be harmful to pets, SPCA warns (29news.com) — Charlottesville pet owners are being urged to protect their animals from the chemicals in ice-melt products used on local roads and sidewalks this winter. The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA recommends rinsing dogs’ paws after walks, shortening outings during icy weather, and choosing pet-safe ice melt for home use to reduce irritation and potential harm.

2. Fifeville neighborhood to get grocery store co-op after 20-year wait (29news.com) — Fifeville residents are finally getting a neighborhood grocery store, with the Charlottesville Food Co-op chosen to open a community-owned market at 501 Cherry Avenue after two decades without one. The co-op aims to create local jobs, keep dollars in Charlottesville, and support area farmers, but organizers must first raise about $4 million before a planned fall 2027 opening.

3. Amid federal investigations, George Mason leaders say negotiations continue with Justice Department (fauquiernow.com) — Professors and staff at UVA are planning a rally in Charlottesville to protest the university’s Board of Visitors and its handling of governance and presidential hiring. Their action comes as UVA and George Mason University navigate federal civil-rights investigations and political fights over academic freedom, diversity policies, and who should control Virginia’s public universities.

4. Even More Times Accused Killers, Racists Launched Controversial Fundraising Campaigns (theroot.com) — Charlottesville appears here in a look back at the 2017 counterprotest where a driver killed Heather Heyer and injured dozens, one of several cases tied to controversial crowdfunding. The story surveys how GoFundMe and GiveSendGo have hosted, and sometimes removed, campaigns supporting accused killers and people involved in racially charged incidents. It also highlights the platforms’ evolving rules on fundraising for violent crime defenses.

5. Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes admits 'at least 6 million' Jews were killed in Nazi Germany (forward.com) — Charlottesville is mentioned as the site of the 2017 Unite the Right rally that helped elevate extremist commentator Nick Fuentes, who’s now back in the spotlight after a combative interview about the Holocaust. The piece focuses on his recent remarks, ongoing antisemitic rhetoric, and growing political backlash, including a U.S. Senate resolution condemning his views and their amplification.
