Canine Influenza, Flu Shots for Dogs

We can help keep your Dale City, VA dog happy and healthy with a flu shot.

Human can contract the flu, but did you know dogs can as well? The good news is that people cannot catch dog flu, but dogs that spend time together with lots of other dogs are at high risk. Although canine influenza does not live long in the environment, it spreads very easily in atmospheres like kennels, dog parks, dog shows and dog training classes. Also, one tricky thing about canine influenza is that it can strike healthy young dogs as viciously as it can strike puppies, elderly dogs and dogs with chronic health problems. It is an equal opportunity infector. Furthermore, the virus is not “seasonal” in nature as human influenza seems to be—it can spread in the fall, winter, spring or summer. And because we already know of an ongoing canine influenza outbreak in the Northern Virginia area, the risk is high right here in our neighborhood. So if you expect to be out and about much with your dog being around other dogs this season, please contact our animal hospital about flu shots for dogs.

If your dog is sick, you can help with the following:

  • Plenty of fluids—if your dog becomes dehydrated because he or she is unwilling to drink, we can administer IV fluids if necessary. (Keeping your pet hydrated is extremely important during a case of the flu.)
  • Tests and medications to diagnose and treat any secondary bacterial infections (e.g. pneumonia).
  • Nutritious, easy-to-digest foods and supplements to support your dog’s immune system (again, talk with us if your dog is having trouble eating or drinking).
  • A quiet, comfortable, cozy spot for your dog to sleep, away from other dogs.

Please talk with your Woodbridge Animal Hospital veterinarian today about flu shots for dogs and schedule an appointment right away if you suspect your dog has any canine influenza symptoms. As always, feel free to give us a call: (703) 897-5665. We're here to help!
