Should Muslims Celebrate Thanksgiving?

Good Question!

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is about being grateful for the things in our life which actually are blessings from God. But first, let’s talk about the history of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving started way back in 1621! Back then it was to be celebrated for three days. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863.

In my family we celebrate Thanksgiving by having a potluck of all sorts of food. We serve mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, corn, peas, and the main dish TURKEY! And we invite our family over to celebrate this wonderful holiday. I am thankful for my family and what God has bestowed upon us, such as, getting a brand new mosque, which happened only because of God and the support of our friends and family. At Thanksgiving we also donate canned and boxed foods for the less fortunate to make their Thanksgiving Day a special one.

Even though Thanksgiving only happens once a year, Islam teaches us to give thanks everyday. We thank God by performing our five daily Prayers. The Holy Qur’an states, “Therefore, remember Me, and I will remember you; and be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful to Me” (2:153).

To be thankful to God everyday, we must be thankful to His creation and practice love and care for all.

Remember this was an opinion of a 14 year old, so take it as one :)
