Prince William County police are looking for a man involved in what they termed to be a “suspicious incident” last week at a Dale City day care center.

On Thursday, the police released photos of the man and his car, a dark-colored Mini Cooper. Police detectives believe this incident is isolated and could be a misunderstanding, and they said there’s no public threat at this time.

The man is described by police as a black male, between 20 and 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds with an unknown accent. He was last seen wearing a Chicago Bulls hat, a black sweatshirt with red writing and dark pants.

At 6:10 p.m. April 3, officers responded to Small World Day Care at 4361 Dale Blvd. to investigate a report of a suspicious person.

A staff member told police that a young man entered the day care and attempted to pick up a child. The man claimed to be associated with the child’s family, according to a police report.

There was initial confusion during the encounter, and the man was originally turned away because he didn’t have identification, the police said. The man returned a short time later and presented staff with an ID.

Upon checking the approved pick-up list, the day care staff determined the man was not listed to pick up the child, and he was turned away without incident. No other contact was made, the police said.

The man was last seen leaving the parking lot in the dark-colored Mini Cooper. Staff members were unable to provide police with the name given by the man.

Police contacted the child’s guardians, who did not know the individual, they said.
