Man accused of setting Danville city councilman on fire deemed competent to stand trial (13newsnow.com) — A man accused of a brutal July attack that left Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler with severe burns has been ruled competent to stand trial. Prosecutors say the suspect, Shotsie Buck-Hayes, intended to kill Vogler, and he now faces a possible life sentence while being held in isolation at the Danville jail.

2. Virginia's first school performance framework highlights local districts' strengths and struggles (wdbj7.com) — Danville families can celebrate that, for the first time in more than a decade, every Danville Public School is fully accredited under Virginia’s new performance framework. One local school is rated distinguished, most are on track, and leaders say the results reflect focused effort despite concerns from some districts about the new labels.
   

3. Halifax County Sheriff's Office arrests suspects after woman forcibly removed from vehicle (wset.com) — A woman was briefly hijacked in Halifax County by suspects who drove her vehicle toward Danville before returning it to the South Boston area, where officers later recovered it in Riverdale. Multiple agencies helped arrest the suspects and recover a firearm, and authorities say the victim was unharmed and the incident appears isolated with no ongoing threat to public safety.
   

4. William Letcher's Story Lives On (theenterprise.net) — A Revolutionary War-era story with Danville ties traces the life and murder of patriot leader William Letcher, who married Elizabeth Perkins of Perkins Ferry near Danville. The piece follows their move west, his militia service, his assassination by a Tory, and modern efforts to locate his home and related graves at Laurel Hill in Patrick County.
   

5. Dead vultures in Rocky Mount mark 14th bird flu case in Virginia since July (wdbj7.com) — Danville is among several Virginia communities where vultures have tested positive for bird flu since July, though no human cases have been reported in the state. Wildlife officials say the current outbreak is limited to vultures, poses low risk to the public, and has not affected drinking water, but they urge anyone handling birds to take precautions and report unusual die-offs.
