MANASSAS, VA ? One student assaulted another in a middle school bathroom in Manassas last week, according to a report from the Prince William County Police Department.

The victim, a 14-year-old girl, received treatment at an area hospital for her injuries. Authorities did not specify the nature of her injuries, but they said they were not life-threatening.

The police department identified the other student as another 14-year-old girl. She is charged with one count of unlawful wounding. Her court date is pending and she is being held at the county's juvenile detention center.

The police department has not released the girl's name due to a Virginia law that protects the identities of minors who are accused of crimes.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on June 2 in a bathroom at Parkside Middle School. Investigators said the victim was in the bathroom when the other girl walked up behind her, grabbed her hair, and pulled her to the ground.

The accused teen hit the victim multiple times before leaving the bathroom, according to the police report.

The victim went to the school nurse before she was taken to a nearby hospital. After an investigation, the accused teen was arrested on Tuesday.

In a letter to families, Parkside Middle School principal Mary Jane Boynton said other students recorded the assault and shared the video on social media.

"Both the fighting and sharing of associated video footage is neither appropriate nor consistent with the school environment that so many of our students, and faculty and staff have worked so hard to create," Boynton wrote. "I encourage all members of the community to refrain from forwarding, copying, or sharing similar videos should they appear on social media in the future."

Boynton believes that social media trends may have contributed to the assault and the recording.

"The safety of our students and staff is my top priority," Boynton said. "I appreciate your cooperation, patience, and support as we build a positive school climate that is conducive to student learning."
