MANASSAS, VA — President Donald Trump's loss in Virginia on Tuesday was worse than his performance against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, as his margin of defeat increased from 5.2 percentage points in 2016 to 7.1 percentage points in 2020.

The turnout in Virginia in 2020 far exceeded 2016 numbers. In the presidential race, 4,262,073 Virginians voted in 2020 compared to 3,984,631 votes cast in 2016.

According to unofficial results, 2020 Democratic nominee Joe Biden received 2,286,406 votes in Virginia, or 53.65 percent of the ballots, compared to 1,896,101 votes, or 44.49 percent of the ballots, for Trump.

In 2016, Clinton received 1,981,473 votes, or 49.73 percent of the ballots, compared to 1,769,443 votes, or 44.41 percent for Trump.

Trump lost support in Manassas from a percentage standpoint in 2020 compared to 2016.

In 2016, Trump received 5,953 votes, or 39 percent of the ballots in Manassas, compared to 5,978 votes, or 37 percent of the ballots in 2020. Biden won by 24 percentage points in 2020, while Clinton won by 16 percentage points in 2016.

Tuesday's vote climaxed a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day.

With millions of votes still being counted, the outcome of the race between Trump and Biden remained in flux, with the possibility that the winner would not be known for days. Key states where results are outstanding included Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.
