Incumbent Carter Loses To Maldonado In 50th District Primary
Incumbent Delegate and former gubernatorial candidate Lee Carter lost to Michelle Maldonado-Lopes in Tuesday's Democratic Primary.

MANASSAS, VA — Incumbent Delegate Lee Carter currently lost to Michelle Lopes-Maldonado in Tuesday's Democratic primary for the 50th District House of Delegates, according to early results from the Department of Elections.
Maldonado secured 44 percent of the vote, while Carter and Helen Anne Zurita earned 39 percent and 11 percent respectively, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Carter also ran for the Democratic nomination for governor on Tuesday. The nomination was ultimately won by Terry McAuliffe, according to the AP.

On Twitter, Carter said he was glad to be done with politics. "This job has made me miserable for the last 4 years," he said. "I'm relieved to say that I've done my part, and now it's someone else's turn."
Maldonado is a former attorney and current small business owner, she said on her website. She said she is focusing on "civil discourse while growing jobs, ensuring a thriving economy and a living wage, closing the wealth gap, improving transportation and infrastructure, and supporting our teachers and schools, as well as creating equity, inclusion and access for all."

Steve Pleickhardt is the Republican nominee for the 50th district seat. Maldonado and Pleichardt will square off in November's general election.
