Manassas Seeking Applicants To Fill Davis-Younger's Council Seat

The Manassas City Council is seeking applicants to fill the seat vacated when Council Member Davis-Younger becomes mayor in January.

MANASSAS, VA — The Manassas City Council is seeking applicants to fill the council seat that will be vacated when Council Member Michelle Davis-Younger begins her first term as mayor in January.

The person chosen by the city council will fill Davis-Younger's seat on an interim basis until a special election is held in November 2021. The person elected in the November 2021 special election will serve until Dec. 31, 2022, the end of Davis-Younger’s Council term.

Candidates interested in serving on the city council until the special election is held can apply at https://www.manassasva.gov/joincc until Nov. 29 at 5 p.m.

Davis-Younger, a Democrat won the mayor's race on Nov. 3, defeating fellow Council Member Theresa Coates Ellis, a Republican, by 369 votes.

The city council will review all the applications and then select a replacement. Manassas City staff will assist city council by processing the applications and lining up interviews with candidates. The person selected by the city council will fill the seat when Davis-Younger takes over as mayor in early January.

The city council position involves the following:

  • Attendance at two regular city council meetings each month, held on the second and fourth Monday at 5:30 p.m.
  • Attendance at up to three city council work sessions each month, held on the second Wednesday, third Monday and fourth Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
  • Special meetings, as needed.

A council member may also be appointed to serve on other city boards, committees, or commissions, as well as regional boards.
