Prince William Schools To Stay Closed 1 Month Due To Coronavirus

Prince William County, Manassas City Public Schools and Manassas Park City Schools will be closed through April 13 due to the coronavirus.

MANASSAS, VA — Prince William County, Manassas City Public Schools and Manassas Park City Schools will be closed through at least April 13 due to the growing health concerns caused by the new coronavirus kown as COVID-19, the school systems said Friday.

So far 30 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Virginia, which is under a state of emergency. To help prevent the spread of the respiratory disease, Gov. Ralph Northam earlier on Friday afternoon ordered all kindergarten through 12th-grade schools to close for at least two weeks starting March 16.

The three schools systems in the Prince William County area will be closed for at least an additional two weeks.

In Prince William County, packaged breakfasts and lunches will be provided to-go at select locations throughout the county to anyone under the age of 18. Details on locations and times will be provided in an additional message, according to the school system.

The only employees who will report March 14 -17 will be the superintendent, the deputy superintendent, the associate superintendents and custodians. Designated food service employees and custodians will report during the closure at select locations as scheduled. No other Prince William County Schools employees should report until further notice, the school system.

For student safety, SATs planned for this weekend have been canceled. Students should contact the College Board for more information, the school system said.

In the city of Manassas, all student activities at city schools are canceled until further notice and there will be no use of Manassas City Schools by outside organizations during the closure.

The city schools system said its staff will continue its deep-cleaning efforts in the schools system's buildings during the closure.
