MANASSAS, VA — A plane at the Manassas Airport had a rough landing on Sunday evening. Airport officials said the plane made an emergency landing and later ran off the runway when its landing gear collapsed.

Airport operations initially responded to the runway after they were told that a plane landed without communicating with the control tower, according to airport operations officer Richard Allabaugh. "Shortly after, Airport Operations was notified by the Leidos Flight Service Station that they were in contact with the pilot and that he had landed, nose gear up, on Runway 16L," he said.

The plane, a Beechcraft Bonanza, was making an emergency landing on the runway when its landing gear collapsed. The plane then ran off the runway.

Airport officials did not say where the pilot originated from before flying to the Manassas Airport. After the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were alerted. An investigation is being conducted by the FAA, the Manassas Airport said.

The runways were later reopened, and the Manassas airport is now open.

The most recent information available from the FAA notes that there are more than 300 aircraft based at the Manassas Airport. The vast majority of the aircraft based in Manassas are single-engine planes, according to the FAA report.
