📰 News we're reading

1. Radford under increased state scrutiny for ‘fiscal distress' (cardinalnews.org) — Radford’s finances are under heightened scrutiny from the state auditor, who is weighing whether to label the city in “fiscal distress,” a move that could trigger outside help. Local schools, regional partners, and a proposed 911 center consolidation have all felt the strain of late payments and tight cash flow, even as city leaders defend their decisions and seek a new financial path forward.

2. Radford & NRCC launch Tartan Transfer Program (wsls.com) — Radford University and New River Community College have launched the new Tartan Transfer Program to make it easier for students to move from NRCC to Radford without losing credits. The schools will share the cost of an advisor based at NRCC to guide students step-by-step, helping them graduate faster, save money, and access in-demand career paths tied to the Radford area.

3. Masters, Rebecca Jo (montcova.com) — Radford friends and neighbors are mourning 82-year-old Rebecca “Becky Jo” Masters, a longtime area resident remembered for her faith, kindness, and service through Dublin United Methodist Church. Visitation and funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 19, in Dublin, with additional remembrance and burial in her hometown of Hedgesville, West Virginia. The family suggests memorial donations to several Radford-area charities.

4. Community Foundation of the NRV awards $269,000 to nonprofits, schools (montcova.com) — Several Radford organizations and schools, including Radford City Public Schools, Radford High School, and local assistance programs, are receiving new grant funding from the Community Foundation of the New River Valley. These awards support everything from basic needs to educational projects, with more than $269,000 distributed across the region and applications opening again in May 2026.

5. Christiansburg's Shepherd named state player of year (montcova.com) — Radford High’s volleyball program just swept top Class 2 honors, with senior setter Mattox Adams named state Player of the Year and coach Karen Adams earning Coach of the Year after a 25-1, title-winning season. The story also highlights Christiansburg and Auburn standouts, underscoring how New River Valley volleyball dominated the all-state teams this year.
