Knife-wielding incident Sunday was road-rage related, police say (z951.com) — University of Virginia-area drivers may be relieved to learn police now say Sunday’s knife incident, first reported near University Avenue and 14th Street, was road-rage rather than an attempted carjacking. Charlottesville Police and UVA officials clarified the situation and location remain under investigation, but emphasize it was not a robbery attempt.
   

2. Appellate Litigation Clinic Notches 6 Wins (virginia.edu) — UVA School of Law’s Appellate Litigation Clinic, based at the University of Virginia, racked up six wins in eight federal appellate cases last academic year and even notched its first U.S. Supreme Court victory. Students handled complex issues from immigration to copyright and prisoner rights, gaining intensive real-world experience that faculty say rivals top appellate law firms.

UVA extends admissions offers to the first 1225 Class of 2030 applicants (cvillerightnow.com) — UVA has just admitted its first 1,225 students to the Class of 2030 through binding early decision, including 776 Virginians, in a round based in Charlottesville. These offers come from a pool of 5,108 applicants representing 40 states and 28 countries. Early action decisions are expected by Feb. 15, with regular decisions by April 1.

(virginia.edu) — A University of Virginia School of Law professor explains how courts are increasingly handling pet custody disputes, including a recent Delaware case where divorcing owners had to auction their dog between themselves. She describes how animal law is evolving as more people see pets as family, and how tools like pet trusts and creative judicial solutions are reshaping outcomes for beloved animals.
   

5. Astronomers Find Direct Evidence for Supermassive Stars in Early Universe (sci.news) — A University of Virginia astronomer helped identify chemical fingerprints of primordial supermassive stars in a distant early-universe galaxy using the James Webb Space Telescope. By linking extreme nitrogen levels in galaxy GS 3073 to stars thousands of times the Sun’s mass, the team offers new clues to how the first black holes and galaxies formed.
