Attempted Abduction Of 11-Year-Old Reported in Dumfries: Police

Someone attempted to abduct an 11-year-old girl as she took out the trash at her home in Dumfries on Sunday, according to authorities.

DUMFRIES, VA — Someone tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl outside of her home in Dumfries on Sunday evening, according to a report from the Prince William County Police Department. It is the second attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl in the county in less than a week.

Authorities said the attempted abduction occurred in the evening on Sunday, June 13. It occurred outside of the girl's home in the 3000 block of Antrim Circle, according to the police report.

The 11-year-old victim was approached by an unknown man while she was taking out the trash at the back of her home, police said. During the interaction, the man grabbed the girl and told her not to move as he prevented her from escaping.

Eventually, the girl was able to escape the man's grasp, police said. After the two people separated, the man fled the area on foot.

The victim then ran into her home and told a family member what happened. The family member contacted the police. No injuries were reported in the attempted abduction, according to the police report.

Officers responded to the Dumfries residence at 9:47 p.m. A police K-9 searched the area, but the suspect was not located.

Authorities only described the suspect as a man who is approximately five feet, ten inches tall. No other suspect description was available.

Last week, authorities reported that an unknown person attempted to abduct a different 11-year-old girl at her home in Woodbridge. The police department did not speculate whether the two incidents could be related.

Most reported abductions in Prince William County do not lead to arrests. In 2020, only seven arrests were made in connection with 73 reported kidnappings or abductions in Prince William County, according to an annual crime report from Virginia State Police.
