Fatal Crash On Cardinal Drive Kills 1, Injures 2: Police

One person died and two passengers were injured after a car crash near Cardinal Drive and Swan Way on Sunday morning, police said.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — One person was killed and two passengers were injured after a car crash on Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge on Sunday morning, according to the Prince William County Police Department. One passenger's injuries are considered life-threatening, police said.

Sunday morning's crash is the second fatal accident on Cardinal Drive this month and the third since the beginning of 2020.

Authorities responded to the crash at 7:48 a.m. on Sunday, May 23. Police said that a 2006 Nissan Altima was speeding on Cardinal Drive near Swan Way when it struck the rear of a 2005 Toyota Camry.

After the collision, the Nissan Altima left the roadway, struck a guardrail and a chain link fence, and came to a stop on its roof in a nearby retention pond, according to authorities. Two occupants were thrown from the car, police said.

Another passenger crawled away from the vehicle before officers located him near Eastlawn Drive, according to the police report.

One of the Altima's occupants died at the scene of the crash, authorities said. Police identified the victim as Thyra Sefah Addai, a 32-year-old resident of Woodbridge.

One of the Altima's passengers was flown to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police. The second passenger was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured in the crash, according to a report released by the Prince William County Police Department.

Sunday morning's crash is the second fatal accident on Cardinal Drive this month. On Friday, May 14, a 21-year-old man from Woodbridge died when his car left the roadway and struck a tree near Cardinal Drive and Canary Court. Authorities believed that speed may have been a factor in that crash as well.

In May 2020, a pedestrian was killed off Cardinal Drive near Swan Way when a car left the roadway and struck her. The driver was charged with involuntary manslaughter, racing involving death, and two counts of reckless driving.
