Gaming Resort Proposed In Dumfries At Potomac Landfill: Reports

DUMFRIES, VA — Colonial Downs is proposing a new gaming resort in Dumfries along Interstate 95, according to reports from InsideNoVa and Fox 5 DC. The proposed $389 million resort would include a hotel, eight bars or restaurants, and 50,000 square feet of gaming space.

The resort, tentatively called The Rose, would seek approval from the Dumfries Town Council and planning commission this spring, InsideNoVa reported. In their current timeline, Colonial Downs plans to break ground on the new site this summer and open in January 2023.

Colonial Downs opened Rosie's Gaming Emporium in Dumfries in January. That location hosts 1,800 horse racing machines where players can place bets from 1 cent to one dollar.

Colonial Downs' proposal also includes the construction of a 79-acre public park. The resort would also create hundreds of jobs, according to Fox 5 DC.

The resort would be situated on the site of the Potomac Landfill, along I-95 and Route 234. Colonial Downs has already entered into an agreement to purchase 100 acres from Potomac Landfill Inc, InsideNoVa reports.

The Dumfries Town Council will officially hear the proposal at their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 16. FOX 5 DC and InsideNoVa report that a vote would not be expected until later this spring.
