Gar-Field Loses in Overtime to North Stafford
The first game of the regular school year was a loss for the Indians.
Gar-Field Varsity Football's spotless record of 2-0 was marred last night when the Indians fell to the North Stafford Wolverines in overtime at Barnett Stadium.
Last night's game was the first of the regular school year and was dedicated to the memory of 9/11. In addition to a moment of silence when the school's ROTC presented the color guard on the field, Gar-Field also recognized a former alumni who died in the events of Sept. 11.
The solemn occasion was soon punctuated by the buzz of excitement from the stands, which was filled with students socializing for the majority of the game.

Throughout the first two quarters the game was business as usual for the Indians, thanks to star players De'Vonte Piggott and Ryan Mason.

In the third quarter, the Wolverines started to push back against the Indians' defense and successfully scored three points in the final minutes of the quarter, bringing the score to 6-3.
Attention was then turned away from the game and focused on the stands as a fight broke out between two students. Administration and security guards jumped into the fight and broke it up, but not before all eyes (and ears) were on the hubbub. According to witnesses in the bleachers, the fight -- between two female students -- is not a rare sight at Gar-Field football games.
Despite the interruption, the Indians continued to lose ground against the Wolverines as North Stafford evened the playing field with another three points scored. At the end of the third quarter the game was tied 6-6.
Piggott made a mad dash from one end zone to the next and scored a touchdown, which was then reversed by the referees.
In overtime, the Indians failed to score in four downs, and the Wolverines won the game in overtime, 6-12.
The Indians will take on Battlefield High School in Haymarket on Sept. 16.
