LTC (Ret) John R. Thompson Jr., 50 of Woodbridge VA passed away peacefully at his home in Woodbridge, VA surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

John was born in 1964 in Manchester, NH to the late John R. Thompson Sr. and Joanne Faucher Thompson. John served in the United States Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 29 years of service as an Infantryman, Armor Platoon Leader, MP Company Commander and a Russian Foreign Area Officer. He received a Bronze Star medal for his service in Operation Desert Storm and also deployed for operations in Haiti, Iraq and Cuba. John earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and a Master’s degree from Columbia University. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Carrie Gilbert Thompson; two daughters, Mikayla Thompson and Jordan Thompson; one son, Adam Thompson; two sisters, Frances Raabe and husband John, and Amy Paris and husband James; one brother, Joseph Thompson and wife Leeann; two brothers-in-law David Gilbert and wife Rebecca, and Jon Gilbert and wife Joyce; and nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd, Dale City VA 22193 on Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 6-8pm. A life celebration service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3718 Old Bridge Road, Woodbridge VA 22192 on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at 2:00 pm followed by a reception back at the church.
