Marine Corps Base Quantico, County Establish Partnership

Marine Corps Base Quantico is receiving some updates.

The Prince William County Department of Public Works has entered an agreement with the base, an action the Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) approved recently.

Through this partnership, road and drainage projects will be worked on by the county, according to a release from the Office of Communications.

Marine Corps Base Quantico reached out and told the county it was willing to go into the arrangement, Prince William County Department of Public Works Director Tom Smith explained.

“This is an umbrella agreement where, anytime they need some work that we believe is a public benefit, and we have time to do it, they can ask us to give them a price,” Smith said in a release. “If everything works out, we would go in and do the work for them.”

Around 25,000 people get on base, daily. Backups on I-95 and Route 1 can occur due to problems at either of the main side entrances.

“This is really about partnership in particular. We’re part of the neighborhood. Our roads impact Prince William County,” Marine Corps Base Quantico Base Commander Col. Will Bentley said in a release. “People do use the base — people who live out in the town and people who come on the base and even use the base as a transportation mode to get in and around traffic on I-95.”

Reconstruction and infrastructure work improves transportation and impacts economic development.

“This is not just a one-sided partnership,” Potomac Supervisor Andrea Bailey explained in a release. “This is a collective partnership to make sure that we’re serving at a higher level as it relates to economic development.”

Improvements will start at Russell Road, where a pipe is collapsing and there are slope failures, according to Smith. Prince William County will be reimbursed for this project and future ones.
