Sports Betting In Virginia Passes Billion-Dollar Mark

Through the end of May, sports bettors had wagered more than $1 billion since legal sports betting started in Virginia on Jan. 21.

VIRGINIA — Through the end of May, sports bettors had wagered more than $1 billion since legal sports betting started in Virginia on Jan. 21, according to the latest report from the Virginia Lottery.

For the month of May, $226,963,573 was wagered on sports in Virginia and $203,790,024 was won, the Virginia Lottery said July 1. The Virginia Lottery is responsible for the regulation of sports wagering in the state.

The seven licensed operators in Virginia are Betfair Interactive US LLC (FanDuel) in partnership with the Washington Football Team, Crown Virginia Gaming LLC (Draft Kings), BetMGM LLC, Rivers Portsmouth Gaming LLC (Rivers Casino Portsmouth), Caesars Virginia LLC (William Hill), WSI US LLC (Wynn), and Unibet Interactive Inc.

State law places a 15 percent tax on sports betting activity based on each permit holder’s adjusted gross revenue, which is defined as total wagers minus total winnings and other authorized deductions.
