Stephen Micheal Madison (“Stephen” to some, “Mike” to most) of Dale City, Virginia, passed away on September 23, 2015. Born on October 28, 1945, in Lexington, Virginia, Mike was the son of the late Mary Elizabeth and David A. Madison, II. He was graduated from Lylburn Downing High School in 1963 and from St. Paul’s College in 1967 with a BA in Education. At St. Paul’s, Mike was a 4-year starter on the football team and played on the offensive and defensive lines, as well as being the Tiger’s kicker and punter. In 1966, he was named a Pre-Season Black College All-American. In 1971, he was awarded an MA in Education from the University of Virginia.
Mike’s teaching career included Rockbridge County (9 years) and Prince William County Schools (26 years). In PWCS he taught at Bel-Air Elementary, Rippon Elementary, Godwin Middle School, and Brentsville District High School.
In addition to the classroom and administrative duties, Mike was also a coach of track, wrestling, and basketball; but his passion was for football. His football coaching career extended over 40 years. For more than 30 years he was an Assistant Football Coach (Natural Bridge HS, Lexington HS, Stonewall Jackson HS, Gar-Field HS, Godwin MS, Brentsville HS). He was the Head Coach of the Brentsville Tigers from 1991-2002. Mike retired from Prince William County Schools in 2002, but he continued to coach until 2013.

Outside of education and coaching, Mike had many other “loves” in his life. He loved to cook and often catered events for friends and family. He liked to entertain, and his 4th of July celebration (parade and cookout) was a source of pride for him. Mike also enjoyed attending college football games and spent many weekends at St. Paul’s College supporting his college’s football team. He was a charter member of the Prince William Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Mike could often be found anywhere Lotto tickets were sold or with his friends in Charlestown or Atlantic City.
Mike is survived by his wife of 42 years, Eileen “Judy” Madison; his daughter, Kristi; his sons, Stephen (LaTasha), Douglas; grandchildren (“Big Poppa’s Girls”) Iyanna Madison, Gabriella Jordan, Avery Madison, Taya Jordan; brother, David A.
