Vikings Field Hockey Set Sights on Cardinal District Tournament

Team focuses on duplicating last year's outcome.

Last season, the Woodbridge Senior High School Vikings womens field hockey team finished in first place during the regular season and second place in the Cardinal District tournament. Coach Alison Weckstein spoke with Woodbridge Patch about the upcoming season and goals for the future.

"The goals for the team this year revolve around replicating the success that the team had last year," said Weckstein. "We aim to make it to the district tournament again."

Weckstein and the team hope to claim the Cardinal District title this season; something the team has fallen short of in the past.

Six seniors are on the team this year, five of which are veterans from last year's Woodbridge varsity roster.

"All the seniors will be a huge asset to the team and they will be looked at to be the leaders," said Weckstein. "Out of all the seniors, Emily Baer will be the biggest asset."

According to Weckstein, Baer, a center midfielder, was the 2009 First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region player.

The team prepares for the upcoming 2010-2011 season by practicing every day and participating in scrimmages against other Northern Virginia teams.

The Vikings will play a 7:30 p.m. game against the Stonewall Jackson Raiders on Aug. 30 on the home field.
