Virginia On-Time Graduation Data: How Prince William Schools Did

Reports from the Virginia Department of Education show the school's on-time graduation rates compared to the district and state.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — Prince William County Schools outperform the state for on-time graduation rates, according to data released by the Virginia Department of Education Tuesday. The division's on-time graduation rate for the 2018-19 school year was 92.4 percent. By comparison, the state of Virginia average was 91.5 percent.

Taking a look at individual high schools within the division, Battlefield High School had the highest on-time graduation rate at 98.7 percent, while Gar-Field High School trailed the list at 85.5 percent.

  • C.D. Hylton High: 94.7 percent
  • Charles J. Colgan Sr. High: 97 percent
  • Forest Park High School: 94.5 percent
  • Freedom High School: 86.4 percent
  • Osbourn Park High School: 91.5 percent
  • Patriot High School: 98.5 percent
  • Potomac High School: 90.7 percent
  • Stonewall Jackson High School: 87.3 percent
  • Woodbridge High School: 90.3 percent

The division also outperformed the state among some subgroups of students. The English language learners graduating on time at 82 percent exceeded the state's 71.1 percent, and 90.5 percent of students with disabilities graduated on time, compared to 88.5 percent in Virginia.

Economically disadvantaged students had an 87.5 percent on-time graduation rate, which is in line with state percentages.

Among Asian students, who make up 9 percent of the student population, 98.7 percent graduated on time. Among black students, who make up 20.3 percent of the student population, 96.2 percent graduated on time. Among Hispanic students, who make up 34.4 percent, 79.7 percent graduated on time — just below the state's 80.1 percent. According to the report, 98.1 percent of white students graduated on time.

High schools in Prince William County had 6,629 students enrolled in 12th grade during the last school year. Other demographics comprising the student body include 30 percent white, 5.8 percent two or more races, 0.2 percent Native Hawaiian and 0.2 percent American Indian.

In the division, 12.6 percent of students have disabilities, 40.4 percent are economically disadvantaged and 25.8 percent are English learners.

The class of 2019 had 29.5 percent with advanced diplomas, 58 percent with standard or other diplomas and 9.7 percent of students who dropped out.
