Widening Of Route 1 In Woodbridge Delayed: Report
The completion date for the project to widen Route 1 between Mary's Way and the Occoquan River is now a year later than expected.
WOODBRIDGE, VA — Virginia Department of Transportation officials confirmed this week that the project to widen Route 1 between Mary’s Way and the Occoquan River has been delayed a year, according to reports. The project, originally slated for a fall 2019 completion, will now be complete in fall 2020.
The $165 million project is intended to widen the heavily-used commuter thoroughfare that runs parallel to Interstate 95 from four to six lanes, Potomac Local reported. It also is expected to spur redevelopment in northern Woodbridge.
Virginia DOT officials said the delay is due to challenges relocating underground utilities. Crews also ran into heavy rocks while relocating drainage crossings and a water main. According to a DOT spokesperson, the southbound lanes should be completed by year's end.
