Wind Storm Cripples Prince William County: UPDATE

As of mid-afternoon, around 22,000 customers are without power to go along with numerous reports of downed trees, power lines: PWC Police.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA—As of mid-afternoon Friday, around 22,000 customers are without power to go along with numerous reports of downed trees and power lines throughout the county, according to Prince William County Police.

Because of the nor'easter that has hit the DC region in the form of a strong wind storm, a high wind warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, expect Northwest winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts 55 to 70 mph, with the strongest winds occurring through this evening.

Also, there's an outdoor burning ban until 8 a.m. Sunday.

Here are some safety tips, per the county:

  • Avoid travelling after dark tonight, as downed utility lines will be difficult to see.
  • Power outages should be expected, charge cell phones & devices and make sure you have a flashlight and extra batteries before dark. NEVER use candles or open flames during an emergency.
  • If using a generator, ensure it is outside and away from your home in a well-ventilated area. NEVER use a generator indoors; colorless, odorless Carbon Monoxide gas can kill you.
