Woodbridge Man Pleads Guilty in Md. Wire Fraud Scheme

A Woodbridge man pleaded guilty Thursday in connection with a scheme to embezzle more than $1 million from a D.C.-based consulting company.

A Woodbridge man pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a scheme to steal over $1 million from a Washington, D.C.-based consulting company.

Brian Hooper, 42, of Woodbridge, pleaded guilty Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland.

According to prosecutors, Hooper and another employee at FTI Consulting conspired with the other two defendants posing as clients to receive more than $1 million in refund checks from 2008 through 2013.

The consulting company would issue refund checks to clients in certain circumstances, such as when a client’s retainer exceeded the amount of work that the consulting company actually performed or when the client made duplicate payments to the consulting company.

Hooper faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison at his February sentencing. The other three defendants have all pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in January.
