A groundbreaking ceremony for the Route 28 Widening Project was held by the City of Manassas, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) on Wednesday.
It seeks to address traffic and improve safety, according to a release from the City of Manassas.

Expanding Route 28 to six lanes between Godwin Drive in Manassas and southern Prince William County, creating a dual left turn lane on Route 28 North, and installing a shared use path are among the project’s features.
The work is expected to cost $20.2 million and wrap up in fall 2022.
Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger explained in a release that it will be beneficial for Manassas residents and anyone driving in the city.
“The time we lose in traffic is time we could have spent with family and friends, which is precious,” Davis-Younger said in a release. “Adding capacity and safety features to this important road will help us get where we are going more quickly and safely. We are also excited about the new shared use path that will help us grow our trail system and offer a safe way for bicyclists and pedestrians to get around.”
Paired with additional Route 28 updates, the project’s impact won’t be limited to Prince William County.
“The Route 28 widening is an exciting milestone for the Authority because it’s the first groundbreaking on a NVTA-funded project we’re celebrating in the City of Manassas,” NVTA Chair and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis J. Randall said in a release. “The project is truly regional in nature, aimed at reducing congestion on a high-volume corridor running through the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park, and the Counties of Prince William, Fairfax and Loudoun.”
