1 in 5 Bellevue Kids Is at Risk of Experiencing Hunger and Homelessness

Children from low-income households here in Bellevue are continuing to face the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19. Over the past year, our team here at Bellevue LifeSpring has seen food assistance requests increase by 50% and rental assistance requests triple. Families that have never sought assistance before are now seeking help.

Since the start of the pandemic, the community’s generosity has helped provide over 800,000 meals for Bellevue students and rent payments for more than 400 families, including over 800 children.

For families like Alicia and her eight-year-old daughter Ruby, Bellevue LifeSpring is the stopgap they need. They’re a single-parent household, like half of the households that Bellevue LifeSpring supports. Alicia was laid off from her retail job during the initial shutdown. She couldn’t return to work until recently because she had to stay home while Ruby was learning remotely. Now, Ruby is attending in-person school, and Alicia is working part-time, but there are months of debt that unemployment didn’t cover.

To ensure Bellevue kids like Ruby do not experience hunger or homelessness, Bellevue LifeSpring is inviting community members to join the Give Where You Live campaign to raise $1.5 million. The good news is the community has already come together to raise over $650,000 toward the goal!
