From the City of Newcastle: Newcastle Police Chief Jason Houck is excited to announce a special event that brings together law enforcement and community members. The City of Newcastle’s July 20 Police Day in the Park is a chance for citizens to interact with police officers and explore specialized King County Sheriff’s Office resources, such as the Guardian One helicopter!

Join us at Lake Boren Park (13058 SE 84th Way, Newcastle, WA) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and meet the men and women who keep our community safe. Several departments from the King County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand. Meet the KCSO Marine, SWAT, Air Support and Hazmat units. Attendees will also get to visit with a Police K-9. Our partners from the Bellevue Fire Department will also be there!

The Newcastle Police Department will host a bike rodeo during the event. Our officers will teach kids how to safely maneuver their bicycles and watch out for hazards. We’ll also provide free bike and helmet safety checks. Police will hand out badge stickers and offer other fun activities for kids!

“For those with small kids, or those who are just big kids who want to look at and possibly sit in a police vehicle, this is your chance to meet a real officer and learn about the work they do to keep you safe,” Chief Houck said.

Police Day in the Park is another example of Chief Houck’s efforts to promote positive police interactions in the community. He previously held the City’s first Coffee with a Cop and Pizza with Police events, which gave officers a chance to interact with residents and listen to their concerns. Chief Houck also started Police Twitter and Facebook accounts where he shares important crime prevention tips and news with the community.

“It’s important to interact with our citizens and let them know that we’re here to protect them,” Chief Houck said. “Public safety is a team sport and it’s vital that we continue working together to keep this community safe.”

Police Day in the Park is presented by the Newcastle Police Department, the City of Newcastle and the King County Sheriff’s Office. The City of Newcastle contracts with KCSO for police services. The partnership gives Newcastle the benefit of constant access to officer backup from nearby contract cities or KCSO patrol deputies, and use of specialized KCSO units, such as the air support helicopter or SWAT unit.
