In a 5-4 vote, the justices ruled that legally married same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples. This ruling affects many couples in Washington, where same-sex marriage is legal.
In a separate 5-4 vote, the justices declined to rule on California's Proposition 8, which means that a previous ruling that struck down the measure and upheld same-sex marriage in California stands.
