Culvert Replacement In Kirkland Will Close 111th Ave NE

The 21-day closure is needed so crews can replace a culvert that will eventually allow fish to migrate up Juanita Creek.

KIRKLAND, WA — A small but vitally important local waterway will get an important upgrade soon, but it's going to require the closure of a neighborhood street for three weeks.

Beginning July 15, construction crews will close 111th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 141st Street for 21 days. They will remove a failing steel culvert that allows Juanita Creek to flow beneath 111th Avenue.

In its place, crews will build a 12-foot wide concrete box culvert. It'll be wide enough to allow water and sediment to flow freely, keeping the creek's banks intact. The culvert will also be big enough for fish to migrate through. The creek flows from the east side of I-405 near Northeast 148th Street to Lake Washington at Juanita Beach Park.

The construction zone will be about one block north of Helen Keller Elementary. There will be detours in place around the construction, but there will be access for local traffic, mail, and emergency services.
