QFC To Launch First Live Produce Farms At 2 Washington Stores
The grocery chain will install modular hydroponic produce cases at two Washington locations this month.

KIRKLAND, WA — Shoppers in Kirkland and Bellevue will be the first in the Pacific Northwest to see vertical indoor farms growing fresh produce at QFC. The supermarket chain's parent company, Kroger, announced a partnership with the German-based urban farming startup Infarm on Tuesday. The company has installed more than 200 in-store farms throughout Europe, harvesting more than 150,000 plants monthly.
According to Kroger, 15 QFC stores in Washington and Oregon will receive vertical farms by April, but Kirkland and Bellevue will get the first look in November. Kroger, the nation's largest supermarket chain, said having produce grow on-site removes the need for transportation and storage, and gives shoppers a fresh and sustainable option.
Infarm's modular farming units use cloud-based technology to make adjustments, and the system learns how to best optimize lighting and temperature for its environment. The hydroponic systems grow herbs, like basil, dill, and thyme, along with other greens like kale.
