“Slash-and-burn” is an agricultural method that involves cutting and burning off all vegetation on a plot of land to regenerate the earth. The processes of devastation, deforestation, and erosion give way to fertility and renewal, allowing new crops to grow. In Slash & Burn, artists give birth to new creations by harnessing the same destructive power of flame and blade: soot and char as media, the heat of burning, cauterizing or melting; and cutting, slicing, sawing, and tearing as creative acts.
Featured Artists: Celeste Cooning, Joy Hagen, Deborah Kapoor, Brenda Mallory, Naoko Morisawa, June Sekiguchi, Suze Woolf, Ellen Ziegler
