Traffic Alert: 6th Street Sidewalk Work Begins June 10 in Kirkland

Construction begins Monday, June 10, on 6th Street sidewalks in Kirkland. 

The city's contractor, NPM Construction Company, will begin constructing new sidewalks and ADA ramps and make crosswalk and storm sewer improvements for the 6th Street Sidewalks Project starting June 10. Sidewalks are planned for the east side of 6th Street South from Kirkland Avenue south to tie into the existing sidewalk. Additionally, all crosswalk ramps within the limits of the project will be upgraded to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and a new crosswalk across Kirkland Avenue will be installed. Lastly, storm drainage improvements will be made at the intersection.
The logistics:

Where: 6th Street South, south of Kirkland Avenue, and along the north side of Kirkland Avenue from 6th Street going west. See the map on the reserve side of this notice.

Why: This project completes missing sidewalks where gaps exist, east of the Moss Bay Neighborhood which borders the central business district, ranking high for improving pedestrian connections. Constructing sidewalks and ADA ramps allows for pedestrians to get to their destinations more safely and directly. In addition, the improvements to the storm drain will facilitate a cleaner, more efficient system.

When: Construction is expected to begin June 10 with anticipated completion in September 2013. Typical hours of construction will be from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The contractor is required to keep both lanes of traffic open on 6th Street South during peak hours (before 9:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m.).

What to Expect: During construction traffic lane widths will be reduced to allow room for work, thereby impacting traffic.

Some construction may also require lane closures during non-peak hours. Commuters and drivers should:

• expect congestion on 6th Street and Kirkland Avenue,
  
• plan their trips ahead, and 
  
• use alternate routes if possible.
