Key Drexel Town Square Vote Could Come Monday

Ahead this week: a key Drexel Town Square vote, National Night Out, and more Wisconsin State Fair.

An Oak Creek Common Council vote on zoning for the Drexel Town Square development could come Monday after a public hearing.

The public hearing is scheduled at the beginning of the 7 p.m. council meeting. The city's Plan Commission last month gave a favorable recommendation to the proposed zoning district, called Drexel Town Square Mixed Use Planned Development.

The zoning district has a detailed plan and requirements for Drexel Town Square businesses—from how big a sign can be, to environmental-related aspects to architectural standards. In addition, each business proposed for Drexel Town Square will come forward with its own plan that needs city approval.

Last month, an attorney raised legal issues about the zoning plan, saying the nature of the proposed ordinance could violate state statute and benefit a single business (a proposed Meijer store on the east end of the site, which has been the most controversial aspect of the plan for Oak Creek residents).
