Large Burns Planned Across Oak Creek Starting This Week

The City of Oak Creek is planning controlled burns at up to four sites in the city during the last week of October through November.

OAK CREEK,WI— The City of Oak Creek is planning controlled burns at up to four sites in the city during the last week of October through the end of November.

Controlled burns are recommended to reduce the growth and spread of weedy, invasive and non-native plant species. By introducing fire as an ecological process, native species can be rejuvenated and ecological health is maximized. These controlled burns will be conducted by properly equipped, trained, and experienced personnel.

The following sites are scheduled for prescribed burns in the fall of 2020:

• Abendschein Park (1311 E. Drexel Ave.) – near skate park and along creek.
• HWY 32 Cemetery (10870 S. Chicago Rd.) – prairie surround
• S. Shepard Avenue pond (Shepard Ave just North of Quail Run)
• Oak Creek Municipal Services Building ( 800 W. Puetz Rd.) – three ponds in back lot

At the time of each burn, visibility in the immediate area may be impaired due to smoke. Members of the public are advised that smoke emanating from the burn area is not cause for alarm.

However, for safety reasons, burn sites will be closed to the public for the duration of the burn.
