Authorities Identify Oak Creek Man Who Died In I-94 Crash

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the man was behind the wheel of his 2006 Chevy Trailblazer on Friday night.

EAU CLAIRE, WI — A 41-year-old Oak Creek man has died and the three passengers he was traveling with were injured after authorities say they were involved in an accident on I-94 Friday night near Eau Claire.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the man was behind the wheel of his 2006 Chevy Trailblazer traveling west on I-94 just after 9 p.m. Authorities say his vehicle entered the median, rolled several times and struck a guard rail. The man was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest in the east-bound lanes.

On Sunday, authorities named the man who died as 41-year-old Elvis Mejia of Oak Creek. He was driving with three other family members, a 41-year-old woman and two teenagers. Mejia's three passengers all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

First responders reported finding Mejia's body laying in the freeway. The entire freeway in the area was shut down as emergency crews rushed to the area. He was pronounced deceased at the site of the crash by the local medical examiner.

The Wisconsin State Patrol says that three other passengers riding in the Trailblazer, one woman and two teenagers were transported to Mayo in Eau Claire with non-life-threatening injuries, though one of the teens was also thrown from the car during the crash. She ended up on the shoulder of the median.
