Oak Creek Police: Vehicle Break-Ins Down; Vehicle Accidents Up

OAK CREEK, WI — The number one reason Oak Creek residents call police is to report suspicious activity, according to a monthly report published by the Oak Creek police department in June.

The department released its June Crime Analysis Report for the city, which showed 129 calls reporting suspicious activity in June, up from 117 calls in May.

The report indicated that citizen complaints for animals, property damage and theft all increased from May to June this summer, but that vehicle break-ins, vehicle thefts and domestic violence calls all went down.

Here are some highlights from June's report:

"There was a total of 10 thefts from vehicles in June. This is a 56 percent decrease compared to May. Of the 10 thefts, there were two incidents of theft of catalytic converter, one theft of license plates and a theft of a front grill," police said in their report. "Two thefts were prevented because vehicle was locked according to reports. Three vehicles were broken into due to vehicle being unlocked and one was unknown."

Police said there were three vehicle thefts in June — a 50 percent decrease compared to May. Two of the three vehicle thefts were done by someone that the owner knew and two of the three were recovered, according to police.

There were 74 reports of vehicle accidents that involved damage to private property in June, police said in their report. This was a 42 percent increase compared to the month of May.

Police said the top five contributing factors, from greatest to least were: inattentive driving, failure to yield, following too close, unsafe backing, and failure to control vehicle.
