Oak Creek Residents Reminded To Remove Snow From Fire Hydrants

OAK CREEK, WI — With more snow arriving Thursday, Oak Creek officials said it is critical that residents clear the area around nearby fire hydrants if they haven't already done so.

"Consider helping elderly friends, neighbors, or those with medical conditions to keep their fire hydrants clear," officials said via the city's official Facebook page.

When snow hides fire hydrants, firefighters have to locate and shovel out the hydrants before hooking up to them in an emergency situation, and precious time is lost, city officials warned.

"When shoveling snow, please be aware of vehicle traffic, and take care not to slip and fall in the roadway!" city officials said. "We want everyone to stay safe this winter."

Keep snow and ice five feet away from hydrants, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In case of a fire, firefighters need to be able to get to the hydrants quickly to protect people and property.

The International Fire Code (IFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Uniform Fire Codes have requirements to ensure the safety of the public and firefighters.

"Unobstructed access to fire hydrants shall be maintained at all times. The fire department shall not be deterred or hindered from gaining immediate access to fire protection equipment or fire hydrants," reads a portion of the International Fire Code.
