Oak Creek's Marwin Evans Turning Heads in Green Bay Packer Training Camp

"If the Packers let him go, they'll play against him," one personnel man told the Packers.

OAK CREEK — Marwin Evans, a hard-hitting safety with an abundance of speed on the field, is forcing the Green Bay Packers to consider him for a roster spot - or risk losing him to another team.

The Green Bay Packers signed former Oak Creek High School and Utah State safety Marwin Evans to a rookie free agent contract in May.

Since then, he has managed to impress during training camp, covering receivers and displaying superior speed and defense against his opponents' running game.

According to a report from the Packers, Evans, a rookie free agent from Utah State, was a hard-hitting tackling machine last Thursday night against Oakland. In just 20 snaps, he tackled ball carriers four times for a net of two yards, dove head-long into a 330-pound tackle to strip blocking on another play and delivered not one but two wicked blocks on Josh Hawkins’ long interception return.

On the other hand, the Packers are reporting, the Packers appear to be as deep at safety as they’ve been at Safety in years. Clinton-Dix, Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde and Chris Banjo return, and rookie free agent Kentrell Brice has a 42-inch vertical of his own, ran 4.43 and has had a terrific camp.

But the quality of Evans play means he will likely end up on an NFL roster - even if it is not in Green Bay: “If the Packers let him go, they’ll play against him,” one personnel man told the Packers. “You can’t tackle as well as this guy tackled and run 4.4 and not have a place.”

Here's what the Journal Sentinel reported:

Evans, a college teammate of Packers third-round pick Kyler Fackrell, had taken part in Seattle Seahawks rookie camp on a tryout basis last weekend. The Seahawks did not sign him and the Packers quickly pounced on him, choosing to sign him to their 53-man roster rather than work him out first.
