Patch Users React to New Gun Shop/Shooting Range
A new gun shop and shooting range on 6th Street has generated a lot of discussion, both for and against.

Oak Creek's approval of a new gun shop and shooting range generated a lot of feedback on Oak Creek Patch and Patch's Facebook page.Â
The business will open as part of Black Diamond, 6925 S. 6th St. Many applauded the news, saying the facility will teach law-abiding citizens how to properly exercise their right to use guns.Â
Others, however, were much more hesitant, particularly with the timing of the vote coming exactly one year after the Sikh temple shooting.Â
A sampling of comments:Â
Joe Chirico:
- "Can't wait for it to open!"
- "What a perfect opportunity to show that our community can be an example in proper training, gun safety as well as compassion for what happened last year. In case you haven't been watching the news, violent crime is creeping into all communities. I'm glad we have aldermen and people in our local government that use common sense and aren't swayed by the chance to use every incident as a way to jump on the gun control bandwagon."
- "And I'm thrilled that someone slowed down and asked the hard questions about whether or not introducing more arms and armed individuals to our streets is prudent given the fact that we have already been rocked by violence. And on the anniversary of it! Classy. This just isn't some fearful person with one in their home, this puts more of them in cars, driving your streets and shopping along next to your kids in the grocery store (assuming smart businesses haven't already banned them). Thank you to the person being the voice of healthy discussion, even if the opposition likes to threaten."
- "Maybe this has nothing to do with the temple. However it is bad form to celebrate guns on the day people are morning deaths by said weapon. I appreciate (Plan Commissioner Dawn)Â Carillo raising questions about something as serious as bringing countless numbers of guns into the community. Those of you think that gun violence is just about the "nuts" with guns must know that those people are your people too if your a gun owner. Please take responsibility for them. Many of the "crazy" people who use guns were once members of society that you would have said "Hello" to on the street. The Sandyhook murder was as much about his mother's need to have guns to "protect" herself as it is about her poor ill son who had access and TRAINING in a tool he was not emotionally equipt to handle. If you sign off on a firing range without really considering the consequences it would be very irresponsible. Thank you Dawn for being an responsible citizen. Those of you with the power of gun ownership please don't use those guns to intimidate and scare those of us who do not support your gun use. We have right to question and disagree with you."
- "Excellent! This is going to be a good addition to the area. I will be a regular customer."
- "I agree Bob! Anyone with half a brain knows that the customer base is going to be the law abiding citizens (safety concerns? get real!). I too will be shopping here!"
