The park's namesake, Maurice Fredericks, is known as the co-founder of the city of Rohnert Park. Fredericks and co-founder Paul Golis master planned the city after purchasing seed farm land from the Rohnert family. The master plan included a park next to a school in each neighborhood in the city.

"I’m excited to add another park to our community and continue the legacy of Maurice Fredericks. Maurice was a strong advocate for parks in Rohnert Park," said Rohnert Park Mayor Joseph Callinan said. "This is a way to honor his contributions to the quality of life for our residents."
