SMART Cancels Service Because Of PG&E Shutoff

SMART trains will not run Tuesday, Oct. 29.

When PG&E turns the power back on, local jurisdictions have to reactivate all local traffic control systems and synchronize them with SMART railroad crossing warning devices.

NORTH BAY, CA — SMART trains will not be in service Tuesday, Oct. 29, because of the impact the latest in a series of PG&E public safety power shutoffs will have on local city traffic signal systems that cross SMART railroad tracks, officials with Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit said.

PG&E confirmed Monday evening, Oct. 28, that it would be shutting off power in portions of 29 counties —including Marin and Sonoma — affecting electric service for up to 605,000 customers as a forecast severe wind event hits the North Bay starting Tuesday morning, Oct. 29.

"When PG&E turns the power back on, local jurisdictions have to reactivate all local traffic control systems and synchronize them with SMART railroad crossing warning devices," SMART officials said.

"To protect the public safety by providing time for local jurisdictions to reactivate local traffic control systems, and to clear any newly downed trees from tracks due recent high winds, train service will be canceled on Tuesday, October 29."
