Transit Van Spills Molasses In Highway 101 Crash In Santa Rosa

The molasses was pushed to the side of the highway and the No. 4 lane was closed for the cleanup.

SANTA ROSA, CA — Molasses spilled from a transit van that collided with two other vehicles Friday morning on northbound U.S. Highway 101 just south of the Steele Lane off-ramp in Santa Rosa, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision happened around 9:50 a.m. The molasses was pushed to the side of the highway and the No. 4 lane was closed for the cleanup.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department and Caltrans responded to the spill and were waiting for the Department of Fish and Wildlife to arrive to approve flushing the molasses into a storm drain, the CHP said.

It was a bad day for motorists on Highway 101 in the Santa Rosa area.

Earlier in the day, a tractor-trailer hauling gravel rolled onto its side during a collision with a Saturn on southbound Highway 101 north of College Avenue around 7:20 a.m.

The driver of the Saturn did not notice traffic slowing in front of her and she veered to the right into the big-rig causing it to roll over, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

Two lanes of the highway were closed for about three hours but traffic was backed up in both north and south directions for miles. The two incidents happened less than a mile apart.
