Branford Murder Suspect Can't Refuse Meds: Report

Medications should restore him to competency, judges ruled.

This week judges ruled that Dr. Lishan Wang can be forced to take psychotropic medications in order to stand trial competently for a murder charge, according to a report by the New Haven Register.

Wang, 49, is facing charges for allegedly shooting Dr. Vajinder Toor outside of his Branford condominium as well as shooting at his wife, who was not struck, according to a report by the New Haven Register. His charges include murder, attempted murder and weapons-related offenses.

Wang allegedly blamed Toor and others for being fired from a New York Hospital.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Eugene Calistro Jr said via the New Haven Register that there are no alternatives because Wang does not believe he is mentally ill.

The medicines will hopefully bring Wang back to competency include olanzapine and ziprasidone, in which both contain side effects. New Haven Chief Public Defender Thomas Ullmann argued that Wang might sustain heart damage if he is forced to take the medications, the Register reports.
