BRANFORD, CT — A cat seen for weeks with a "plastic contraption," (inexplicably) wrapped around its leg and embedded into its neck, was rescued by volunteers, according to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter.

Named "Elsa," as she "was saved before this storm hit or she may not have survived," the cat was trapped and taken to the Piepermemorial Emergency Vet Hospital, where, shelter director Laura Burban wrote on Facebook, it first "appeared they may have to amputate her leg."

"The embedded plastic piece had cut off circulation to her leg causing it to swell and dangle. She appeared to be in severe distress. They said the first 24 hours would be critical for her recovery She has begun the healing process and at this point we are hopeful her leg can be saved," she wrote.

Burban asks that people not "abandon cats outside."

"Please do not think they will just catch mice and survive," she said.
