Branford Schools Says Storm Has Pushed First Day To Sept. 10

This latest adjustment is not even related to the pandemic but rather due to storm damage and power outages that crippled Branford for days.

BRANFORD, CT — As Branford continues to recover from the particularly violent storm that battered the town last Thursday, and with a tree having fallen on Tisko Elementary on top of all the other damage, school officials this weekend announced they have pushed the first day of school to Sept. 10.

In a letter to families, schools superintendent Hamlet Hernandez explained:

"I hope the recent storm’s impact to you and your family was minimal. Thankfully no one was seriously injured; however, many families experienced power outages and had damage to their property. Unfortunately, because of the storm’s impact the district closed on Friday, August 28, 2020, as we also experienced power outages and had damage due to a large tree falling on Tisko Elementary. We are addressing the issues stemming from the storm and will keep you apprised as to the status of Tisko Elementary school.

With the District closed on Friday, we were unable to complete important reopening training and had to cancel some of our scheduled orientations. The activities which were cancelled due to the storm are being rescheduled for this coming Monday, August 31, 2020.

Because of the above change, the first day of school for all students is now Thursday, September 10, 2020. This allows all the professional development and school opening activities to take place. Please note that kindergarten students and students assigned to the blue group in grades 1-4 will be in-person in their respective school on September 10, 2020 with all other students starting school remotely on September 10, 2020.
