Memorial Day Parade Canceled, But We Honor The Sacrifices Still
It's a tragic irony that many of those whose lives are being lost to this pandemic are of the generations that fought for our freedoms.

BRANFORD, CT — For a century, annual Branford Memorial Day programs have included ceremonies at the town's seven cemeteries, a pre-parade speaking program on the Town Green followed by the annual parade that brings several thousand residents along the parade route.
This year because of the pandemic the popular parade has been canceled.
"We feel terrible that this holiday that honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military has to be cancelled," said Bill O'Brien chairman of the Branford Veterans Parade Committee.

“We understand the reason for canceling because of the pandemic while we keep those effected by the virus in our thoughts and prayers."
In addition to the cemetery services, speaking program and parade being canceled the committee will not be placing the flags on the graves at the town cemeteries.

"This has been done by several area scout troops for many years and we can't endanger the youngsters and their leaders by continuing this tradition this year," O'Brien said.
There are over 1,700 graves in the seven Branford cemeteries for those who have served. Committee members will place a wreath in each cemetery.
Each year the Branford parade lineup includes six bands and fife and drum corps along with elected officials and members of the military including the local American Legion and VFW. In addition a number of Boy and Girl Scout and Brownie troops, the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Columbus Day Parade Committee and Branford Garden Club participate. The parade also includes a number of antique and vintage autos and town fire and emergency apparatus.
There has been no plans at this time to cancel the Town's Veterans Day Parade scheduled for Sunday November 8, O'Brien said.
