Obituary: Joseph K. McDonald, Sr. (Joe Mac), 79, of Branford

Founder of half-century-old McDonald Construction​, he enjoyed Florida snow-birding with wife Lois and was a loyal Elks member for 34 years.

It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph K. McDonald, Sr. (Joe Mac) announces his passing after a brief illness on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the age of 79 years.

Joe, son of the late Joseph G. and Enid Lowe McDonald, will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Lois Wade McDonald and his children, Sherrye Krause, Shelly Girardi, Wendy McDonald (Lester), Jennifer (John) Miessau and Joseph McDonald, Jr. (Kim). Joe will also be remembered as Papa by his grandchildren, Taylor (Paul) Spadacenta, McKenzie Miessau, Ireland Miessau and Shania Krause and his great-granddaughter Siena Spadacenta. He also leaves behind his only brother, Gerald R. (Joyce) McDonald and many nieces and nephews.

Joe started his career in trucking and equipment operation and repair at Samuelson Home Builders, as well as working nights selling Founder’s Mutual funds and life insurance to provide for his growing family. His love for the building industry led him to become both founder and president of McDonald Construction, Inc., his passion for the last 50 plus years.

Joe enjoyed snow-birding with his wife in Florida and warmer seasons at his house on the water, whether fishing or just spending time with family.

He was a loyal Elk member for 34 years, where he made many friends and will be greatly missed by all.

Calling hours in memory of Joe will be held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford, with a memorial ceremony performed by the Elks at 6:30 pm. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
